Why Games Make Speed Feel Faster Than It Actually Is
The tunnel walls aren't moving as fast as your heart rate thinks they are โ here's the trick.
Speed is mostly a perception trick
If you measured the actual pixel velocity of a tunnel runner at its "insane" late-game speed, it's often only modestly faster than the speed a few seconds earlier โ yet it feels like a completely different game. That gap between measured speed and felt speed isn't an illusion in the "fake" sense; it's a deliberate exploitation of how your visual system estimates motion, and it's one of the oldest tricks in game design.
Three cheap tricks that do most of the work
- Peripheral motion reads faster than central motion. Your visual system is far more sensitive to movement at the edges of your vision than dead center. A tunnel's rotating walls sweep through your peripheral field constantly, which registers as "fast" even when the walls directly ahead are moving at a modest rate.
- More visual detail per second = more perceived speed. Adding streaks, particle trails, or texture detail that flashes past doesn't change your actual velocity โ but it multiplies the number of distinct visual events your brain has to process per second, and that processing load is what you interpret as "speed."
- Camera shake and field-of-view tricks borrow from real motion cues. A slight camera wobble or a widening field of view mimics what your body actually feels during real acceleration, so your brain imports that "this is fast" signal even though you're sitting still.
Why this matters for how hard a game actually is
Because so much of "fast" is perceptual rather than mechanical, the actual reaction window a game demands often grows more slowly than it feels like it does. That's genuinely useful information: when a run feels unbeatably fast, the walls are usually still arriving with more real time between them than your panic suggests โ which is exactly why staying calm, rather than reacting faster, is often the actual skill that gets you further.
The tell: watch the background, not the walls
A useful trick for testing this yourself โ try to track the far background instead of the incoming obstacle. Because the background carries most of the peripheral-motion illusion, focusing past it to the actual gap you need tends to make a "too fast to react to" moment feel noticeably more manageable.
